Hydroxycut is a thermogenic weight loss supplement that promises to raise the body’s metabolism, resulting in faster fat burning and weight loss. According to the maker of the product, Muscle Tech, Hydroxycut, in conjunction with diet and exercise, will help users lose weight four times faster than diet and exercise alone.
Hydroxycut products, a popular series of weight loss supplements, were voluntarily recalled from the market by the manufacturer in response to a warning issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA received 23 injuries reported by Hydroxycut users. The Hydroxycut products recalled were marketed for weight loss, fat burning and energy enhancement. Other products were promoted as low-carb diet aids and for promotion of water loss. Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia were not part of the recall.
Side Effects of Hydroxycut
Hydroxycut supplements can greatly aid you with weight-loss if taken under supervision of an authorized and well trained physician who can make the best plan for your diet program and keep you updated with all changes during your weight-loss program.
As with all other supplements, hydroxycut can also cause adverse side effects if taken in excess without control. Over-dosage damages your body and your physique. It also causes mental complications along with damage to other vitals.
Some of the side effects of over-using hydroxycut supplements are-
There have been reports by users of hydroxycut feeling anxious, nervous, and fidgety, still more problems that can be blamed on caffeine. To minimize the risk of this side effect, start at the smallest recommended dose and work your way up as needed. Starting at a higher dose could give your body more caffeine that in can comfortably handle.
The most common side effect of hyrdoxycut are headaches. This usually occurs during the first few days of use that can even extend to almost a week. One of another reasons been reported by some of the users is elevated blood pressure which can be a causative agent in headaches. If your headaches do not go away after a few days, check with a doctor or stop taking the supplement.
- Liver Damage
According to the FDA, people taking Hydroxycut at its recommended doses run the risk of liver injury. Signs of liver injury include jaundice and elevated liver enzymes (ALT and AST). Jaundice is recognizable through yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes and brown urine. Elevated liver enzymes are an indicator of potential liver injury.
Other symptoms of liver injury include unexplained itching, fatigue and weakness. Digestive symptoms of liver injury include loss of appetite and stomach and abdominal issues (such as pain, nausea, vomiting and light-colored stools).
The FDA received reports of liver damage so severe that the patients required liver transplants.
Some liver patients recovered when they stopped taking Hydroxycut. One death was reported due to liver failure. The FDA hasn’t determined which ingredients or dosages are associated with the risk of liver injury.
- Cardiovascular Problems
Cardiovascular problems including cardiac arrhythmias were also reported by people taking Hydroxycut, ranging from irregular heartbeats to heart attacks. Irregular heartbeats are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the heart, which can cause the heart to beat too fast or too slow. Heart attacks lead to an interruption of blood supply to the heart, causing some heart cells to die.
- Ischemic Colitis
A case report suggested that one case of ischemic colitis was caused by Hydroxycut. This condition occurs when blood flow to the colon is reduced because your arteries are narrowed or blocked. The researchers speculated that the high levels of caffeine or perhaps one of the herbs in Hydroxycut could have caused the problem.
Rhabdomyolysis was another health problem reported to the FDA. Rhabdomyolysis is a type of muscle damage where myoglobin is released into the bloodstream. Myoglobin can cause other serious problems, such as kidney damage.
Another health problem reported by people taking Hydroxycut was seizures, which occur when there is sudden and abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Seizures fall into two main groups: focal or partial seizures that occur in one part of the brain, and generalized seizures that are a result of abnormal activity on both sides of the brain.
Many users on weight loss forums and message boards report feeling restless while taking Hydroxycut. While extra energy in the daytime hours is a positive and may help you burn more calories, restlessness at night can be a real problem. This restlessness and difficulty sleeping is likely due to the caffeine content of the drug, a problem that is exaggerated if you consume other forms of caffeine while taking it. To avoid insomnia and nighttime wakefulness, do not take Hydroxycut in the hours before bedtime. You should also cut down on other forms of caffeine.
- Caffeine Overdose
Hydroxycut products differ on how much caffeine they contain. Some have no caffeine at all. The formulas with high doses, such as Hydroxycut Max Advanced for Women, contain as much caffeine as three cups of coffee, around 400 mg. Most people shouldn’t have more than 300 mg of caffeine a day. A caffeine overdose can cause shortness of breath and nervousness, or even an irregular heartbeat.
- Other Conditions
Hydroxycut has been suggested as a contributor to some cases of ulcerative colitis. And psychiatric researchers in Australia and New Zealand have studied Hydroxycut as possibly triggering manic episodes. There are others like,
- Facial and chest acne
- Erection achieving and maintaining difficulty
- Infection of the vagina
- Blurry vision
- Bleeding of nose
